Helping Your Child Read

When it comes to the types of academic and career opportunities a student is eligible for, it’s their reading level which can be the determining factor. If you want to help your child improve their reading level, The Tutoring Center, Long Beach has some tips which can help.

Junk Mail

There’s a good chance that your mailbox still fills up with promotional material and letters from your bank despite your dreams that email would be the end of physical mail. While you usually discard this mail or loosely read the notices, instead, use these as a teaching platform. As you prepare dinner or unwind of an evening, ask your children to read the mail to you. This could range from a letter from your bank about an upcoming change or a flyer about a local pet store which is having a sale. While it may seem like strange reading material, the range of material exposes your student to a range of writing styles and vocabulary choices which they may not otherwise encounter in their classroom.

Kitchen Lessons

If your children watch TV or play video games while you cook, change things up by inviting them into the kitchen to help while you also give them a reading lesson. As you use your ingredients, ask your children to read the ingredients list on the label out loud. Of course, these mostly scientific words aren’t going to form part of your child’s daily vocabulary, so the lesson being taught is pronunciation. Sounding out new words is a great technique, however, it is limited by the exposure children have to letter-sound combinations. The list of ingredients and even other written material on the can will include words and sounds that students wouldn’t have heard before, helping them to learn new words easily when they are on their own.
