How to Address a Report Card With Low Grades

If you are yet to receive your child’s first report card for the school year, they will soon be on their way. When it arrives, if the grades shown are lower than you were expecting, below is a post from The Tutoring Center, Long Beach on how you can address this.

Why Are Their Grades Low?

The first thing any parent will think when seeing low grades is that their child simply didn’t try or isn’t interested in learning. However, there is a large range of other reasons which can cause low grades. The best way to find out is to have a relaxed and comfortable talk with your child, often over a snack, and find out what’s happening with their grades. It could be:
  • They are struggling to find enough time to complete their homework.
  • The lessons are more complex than they were prepared for.
  • Note-taking is difficult during the lessons.
  • There are learning tools your child doesn’t have.
Whatever the reason is, be sure that you are open to it and work with your child to help them overcome it. Keeping with the above examples:
  • Help them to rearrange their schedule to allow more homework time.
  • Provide additional homework help.
  • Show them how to take more effective and productive notes.
  • Get them the tools needed for their classes.
Of course, this isn’t a complete list of causes. It’s just an example of small and fixable problems which don’t relate to a child’s disinterest in learning. Remember that you won’t get any positive results from simply becoming angry or frustrated at their grades.

Does Your Child Need More Help?

If your child needs more help than you are able to provide, there is a range of other methods which they can benefit from, such as:
  • Find alternative textbooks or reading material which presents their lessons in a different way.
  • Look for group study sessions where they can informally learn from their peers.
  • Sign them up for one-to-one tutoring in Long Beach to address any learning challenges and help them understand their new classes.
